Now that I have a nice, spacious balcony I find myself inspired and excited to delve farther into container gardening in hopes of possibly saving money and greening up my outdoor space with useful plants in addition to pretty ones. Unfortunately, it's a bit late to start seeds for most of the things I'm interested in growing and I'm still trying to suss out what might actually do well on my West-facing deck.
So far, I have chocolate mint and Moroccan mint already growing, chive sprouts are coming up and I was hoping to get some swiss chard in soon. I'm considering broccoli since it is usually planted in the later summer and I love to eat it, but I think most of the magic will happen next year when I have time to prepare and make a real plan. My goal is to try my hand at growing eggplant or cucumbers and hopefully tomatoes and/or peppers.
I think once I get the greenery going I'll copy my friend Mary T. of Shelteriffic and steal this fun, cheap lighting idea (that she stole from The Art of Doing Stuff) to continue my Domestic Goddess sanctuary outside my back door.

Hey! It's not too late... I've got big rubbermaid tubs growing lettuces now that will be filled with kale and broccoli soon. You should get a seed starting flat going and get your "cole crops" started now, so you can transplant them later (much cheaper this way)
And I've been seeing some good looking tomato plants at the Farmer's market still... Some sungolds would be a quick-ripening varietal.
I may have to pick your brain more, Megan - this is a new thing for me and I'm just learning about the zones, etc.
Thanks for the tips, I'd love to have something to harvest soon!
